Observing this custom or not doing so does not make one’s repentance more real, nor one’s faith more sincere. Participation in this rite is voluntary worshipers will not be required or expected to take part.The ashes placed on the worshiper in the shape of the cross also remind us that because of Christ and his death, our guilt has been removed. The purpose of this custom is to proclaim God’s law, reminding us of our need for Jesus’ redeeming grace since sin brings death and our bodies will turn to dust. ![]()
